DIY or DIDon’t: Should You Hire a Web Design Company or Do It Yourself?

Edited by Charity Chezum • Aug 01, 2020

You can find a DIY website builder online and put together a functioning website in under an hour, and you can do it without spending much money. So is spending money on a web design company worth the cost?

The short answer to that question is yes.

While the speed of DIYing is certainly convenient, it comes with its fair share of disadvantages. By building your own website, you’re sacrificing several other things instead.

Here’s a quick look at some of the most important.

Traffic

One of the biggest problems with DIY websites is they aren’t competitive. Odds are you won’t be able to rank above your competition in the search results—in fact, you might not even be close.

On top of that, these types of websites also:

That means your customers won’t be able to find you.

If people can’t get to your website (or if they have a hard time using it), they won’t stick around for long. By losing these customers, you’re also losing business and, therefore, money.

Customization

When you choose to build your own website, you also choose whatever DIY web design the program gives you. Customization is almost always out of the question.

Unless your website only needs basic features (which isn’t likely), you won’t be able to build a site that represents your business on your own.

Maintenance

Is there something wrong with your website?

Going the DIY route means you’ll have to figure out what’s causing the issues and fix it yourself. If you don’t have a lot of experience with coding, this can be a long and difficult process.

And every minute your website isn’t working[2], you’re losing more money.

But Doesn’t DIYing Help You Save Money?

Not really.

Although DIYing your website will cost a lot less upfront, it doesn’t put more money in your bank account. Since your website won’t make it into the top search results, you won’t convert as many customers and sell your products/services.

So you’ll make less money in the long run.

You’ll also need to hire a professional to keep your website running if you encounter any problems. This can end up costing you more money, especially if your website keeps having these issues.

It’s worth spending extra money hiring professional in the beginning to get a competitive website that runs well (and stays that way).

How to Find a Web Design Company That’s Worth Your Money

When you’re looking for a web design company to build your website, don’t focus too much on the price. If you choose the cheapest option you can find, you’ll get a low-quality website, which won’t perform much better than a DIY one.

Instead, base your decision off a company’s experience, customer service, and reviews.
