Smartphone Takeover - Social Media Edition

Technology has flourished significantly over the last several years, and Smartphones are excellent proof of that. Almost everyone has a smartphone these days. According to Pew Research Center:


“The vast majority of Americans – 97% – now own a cellphone of some kind. The share of Americans that own a smartphone is now 85%, up from just 35% in Pew Research Center’s first survey of smartphone ownership conducted in 2011.”


What does this mean for social media platforms? This means they’re becoming easier to access, profiles are becoming easier to create, and connecting to the internet is as easy as 1-2-3. 


Smartphones are taking over our lives, our entertainment, the way we communicate and connect. They are our entire world in our pocket. Why is this so important to emphasize when it comes to social media and your business? Everyone is on their smartphone. Your business will gain exposure. What is the first thing they do when they need to look up a business’ phone number? Business hours? Reviews? “Hey Google” or “Hey Siri, find me Mexican food restaurants in my area?” (Which is why SEO and Google Analytics are SO important when building an online presence, so you can be the FIRST one in their search results). What should pop up first? Your website. Second? Your social media accounts - Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, etc.

If they want to make sure you’re a reputable, legitimate business, they will look up your reviews and social media first. They will look at how active you are on social media, and they will want to see if you are having any fun events or specials. They will see how you react to customers and they will commend you for being “with the times”. 


On the flip side of it, everyone is on social media
because of easy access with their smartphones. Billions (not millions) have one or more social media profiles. Social media is a form of “down time” entertainment to millions, and consumers are constantly connected. Hot trends? Social media. Fitness and health? Social media. Tips and tricks? Social media. Consumers browse social media platforms and interact with influencers, posts, friends, but most importantly, businesses. Does your business show up in the algorithms? Does your business have the exposure it needs to be put in front of people’s eyes as they aimlessly browse their news feeds on their phones?


These are things to think about when looking into your digital marketing plan. Do you have a social media business profile? If you don’t, you definitely
won’t gain money. If you do, you will gain money.
